I know it is nothing like it was 30,50, or 80 years ago, but does the sporting public care anymore, Even Horse Racing forums are virtual ghost towns, If so - What was the primary cause?

No young people to replenish the old fans who only had horse racing as their local gambling. You can gamble on anything anywhere now, including online. Every time one of us horseplayers croaks, there is no replacement.
Add to that the dropping foal crops and the almost certain beating you will take by owning them - it is an unsustainable business model.
That said, if you made me Czar right now, I could not provide any solutions.
Just go to the race book, race track, or one of the contests - it looks like Heaven's Waiting Room.

"Heavens Waiting Room" .....sad but true however IMO, racing signed its own death certificate with ADW`s....part of the allure of a fan being attracted was to actually see the sights and sounds of being there...can`t get that from a computer monitor....Plus the racing today is just not as good as it once was...too many shit tracks and shit fields lead to dwindling interest

As far as racing forums go, they`ve sucked since some moron closed Track Bandits, and Keystone King left the building

Hey I did my part. Passed on my love of handicapping the horses to my oldest son. He comes and plays big weekends with me and as much of Keeneland that he can. We play at Emerald ,but never bet on the horses that run there.

Some excellent points here. Matter of fact they all are. I do agree with Mr. 6 that the ADW’s have been a huge factor as track attendance has suffered dramatically. I also think lowering bets to a dime and 50 cents have been a huge negative. Instead of a score you end up splitting the payoffs into small amounts. Everyone is tired of $9 trifecta payouts or $4.42 superfecta winnings.

I'll take the opposite side Steve. Horse racing has one giant edge that will keep it going forever. It's gambling. Simply put......gambling is bulletproof.....recession proof…..and depression proof. Anything that's addicting has a giant built in base. Think back to the great depression of the 30's......people were starving....had no jobs.....etc.....horse racing rolled right along. Prohibition in the 20's.....no problem for horse racing. Take a gander at the handle for any major track throughout the year.....giant. As far as the age thing.... When I started playing the horses in 1980 I heard the exact same argument...….all old people.....the sport is doomed......nope......anything addicting always has new shooters....that's just the way it is. Live racing....OTB's....Offshore....ADW's......just give us new ways to stay in action.....all the better. Message boards.....you need young people to keep them going......people over 50 lose interest in things quicker don't ya know. Heck....when I was writing this post I was playing online poker at Bovada…..see......addicting...….must have action. BTW.....I had the Saints to win the NFC......yikes.
